Grim Soliloquies
<
Nothing but wall-to-wall knives, guns, and tits. A dark triangle leading youth to ruin. This issue, an eleven year old boy will fall into a strange world of futuristic soldiers, masked villains, and blonde cavemen. He's never seen anything like these intimations of bondage and domination. And who are those faces in the top, left-hand box? None of it makes any sense. Except the promise of violence. Violence beckons like the perfumed scent of a submissive mistress.

Sentinels!!
My first encounter with the Sentinels care of Whilce Portacio. In retrospect, these things are terrifying. Those on the attack, bursting through the ceiling, are like the front runners of some wild tribe of cancerous electronic vikings, screaming their endless hatred as they tear apart and impale their cybernetic prey. Looking at the Sentinel in the rear, mouth closed in focused attention, one can animate the scene, transitioning from hunt to violent assault.
Uncanny X-Men 281, Oct. 1991.
