Although the last issue of this limited series was stupid beyond all comprehension, the issues leading up to that finale were very strong. There was just the right amount of Wolverine as 'best at what he does' mixed with guest stars and favourite villains to make tuning into a pointless event comic worthwhile. Art was aces too.
One of the more interesting parts of the series was writer Charles Soule's use of captions. Readers were able to enter into Logan's consciousness without needing all of that Claremont-esque "hurts like flamin' hell, but I can't quit when Jeanie needs me" monologue. Instead we get the simple impressions of a man with enhanced senses. "Scent of plum blossoms." "Wind kisses rustling petals." At the same time as we see into Logan, we gain a stronger sense of his environment. Words and pictures suddenly work in unison with one another to create a moving picture within the imagination.
